Travertine is priced as natural stone, not as tile. It is a softer, more porous stone than most tile and it is cleaned differently.

The method

How Ultimate Floor Care cleans travertine

  1. 1

Check the finish and the fill

Travertine comes honed, polished or tumbled, and the natural holes in it are usually filled. We check what you have and which fills have come out.

  2. 2

    Clean

A pH-neutral cleaner lifts soil without etching. Acidic cleaners are what damages travertine, so nothing acidic goes on the floor.

  3. 3

    Hone or polish

Diamond abrasives take out etch marks and dulling and bring the finish back to honed or polished, whichever the floor started as.

  4. 4

    Seal

A penetrating sealer slows staining through the open pores without leaving a film on top.

Why travertine dulls and pits in Phoenix homes

Travertine is calcite stone formed with natural voids. Two things follow from that. It reacts to acid, so hard-water deposits, citrus, vinegar and most descaling cleaners etch the surface into dull patches. And the factory fills in its natural holes work loose over time, leaving pits that collect soil and read as dark spots across the floor.

The limit

Etching hones out. Lost fill can be refilled, but the repair is visible on close inspection in some stone. Deep pitting and chipped edges do not come back to new, and we say so during the estimate.

How much does travertine cleaning cost in Phoenix?

Ultimate Floor Care cleans travertine at $0.45 per square foot and polishes it at $1.25 per square foot in Phoenix, Peoria, and the West Valley, the same rates as other natural stone. Estimates are free, and new clients get 10% off the residential subtotal.

Why does my travertine have dull patches that will not clean off?

Because they are etching, not soiling. Travertine is calcite stone and acid eats into its surface, so an acidic cleaner or a spill leaves a mark that no amount of cleaning lifts. Etching is honed out with diamond abrasives instead.

Travertine cleaning is $0.45 per square foot, and polishing is $1.25.

What travertine tile cleaning costs in Phoenix

Travertine is natural stone, so it carries the stone rates rather than the tile rate: $0.45 per square foot to clean and $1.25 per square foot to polish. Estimates are free, and the same rates price a booking online.

It is worth knowing why it is not priced as tile. Ceramic and porcelain are fired and effectively sealed; travertine is soft, porous and reactive. The same product and the same machine would damage it.

Indoors, and around the pool

Travertine is used across Valley homes for patios, pool decks and entryways as well as indoors. Outside it takes direct sun, pool chemistry and irrigation minerals, which is a harder environment than any interior floor.

The work is the same in kind, and we quote it the same way. What changes is how often an exterior floor needs resealing to keep up with the exposure.

Travertine questions

Is travertine priced as tile or as stone?

As stone. It is $0.45 per square foot to clean and $1.25 to polish, the same as other natural stone. It is softer and more porous than ceramic or porcelain, and it is cleaned differently.

What are the holes appearing in my travertine?

Travertine forms with natural voids, and most tiles are supplied with those filled. Over time the fill works loose and the holes reopen, collecting soil. They can be refilled, though on close inspection the repair is visible in some stone.

Can I use vinegar on travertine?

No. Vinegar is acidic and travertine is calcite stone, so it etches the surface. The same goes for most descaling and general-purpose cleaners. Use something pH-neutral and labeled for natural stone.

Do you clean travertine patios and pool decks?

Yes. Outdoor travertine takes sun, pool chemistry and irrigation minerals, so it generally needs resealing more often than an interior floor. It is quoted the same way.

Should travertine be polished or honed?

Whichever it started as, in most cases. A honed floor taken to a polish looks different from the floor you chose, and polished travertine is more slippery underfoot when wet. We will talk it through before any decision is made.

How often should travertine be sealed?

It depends on the traffic and the exposure, so rather than name an interval we cannot stand behind, we check whether the existing sealer is still working and tell you what we find.
